Marybank is a small rural village in the Whanganui District, south of central Whanganui. Whanganui District Council groups it with Fordell and Mowhanau as a village, not as one of the city’s built-up suburbs.
Local addresses are recorded on State Highway 3, Marybank Road, Hewitts Road and Nepia Road. There is no shopping strip or school in the village itself, so daily errands and school runs head into Whanganui.
Council provides a separate rural wastewater scheme and includes Marybank in the district kerbside recycling collection. It is a place of houses and rural properties on country roads, within an easy drive of the river city.

About Marybank
Marybank is a locality rather than a township with its own centre. It is listed among the Whanganui District’s small outlying settlements, in the same broad group as Fordell, Okoia, Westmere and Mowhanau.
On the ground it is a scatter of homes and rural properties along State Highway 3 and a handful of local roads. The name is not a Māori place name, and a verified account of how the locality was named was not found in council or heritage sources.
Whanganui District Council treats Marybank as a rural community with its own small wastewater system. Wastewater is collected through a reticulated network and treated in an oxidation lagoon, with treated effluent discharged to land. The council wastewater asset plan recorded 22 service connections and noted that large-scale development was not expected.
A separate rural scheme is still described on the council wastewater pages. Marybank is not one of the named council water supply schemes, which are the Whanganui urban supply and the Fordell, Pākaraka, Mowhanau and Westmere rural supplies. Anyone buying or building here should confirm whether a property has a council connection, a private supply, or tank water.
Stormwater in rural parts of the district is managed mainly through land drainage. Council notes some minor stormwater infrastructure at Marybank and Mowhanau to deal with run-off.
Kerbside recycling is collected from residential households in the village, as it is in the Whanganui urban area, Fordell and Mowhanau. Council does not run a kerbside rubbish service. Household rubbish is handled through private user-pays collectors or taken to the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre.
The wider district is the home of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi and other Whanganui iwi. The historic pā of Pūtiki, a contraction of Pūtikiwharanui, stands on the south bank of the Whanganui River and is associated with the hapū Ngāti Tūpoho.
St Paul’s Memorial Church sits within the Pūtiki mission station. That river and mission history belongs to the south bank of Whanganui as a whole. It should not be read as a claim that a marae or heritage building stands inside Marybank itself. No heritage listing specific to Marybank was found in Heritage New Zealand’s public records.
Marybank in the Whanganui District is not the suburb of the same name in Nelson. The Nelson Marybank lies on State Highway 6 beside Nelson Haven. A park, school or boulder bank under that name belongs to the Nelson suburb, not to this village.
Getting Around
State Highway 3 is the main road link. It runs south from Whanganui through this part of the district and on towards Bulls and Palmerston North. Marybank Road, Hewitts Road and Nepia Road are the local roads recorded against Marybank addresses.
No public bus stop or dedicated bus route for the village was confirmed in council information used for this guide, so plan on a private vehicle. Whanganui city centre, the river bridges and the shops of Victoria Avenue are a short drive to the north.
Village Services
Marybank suits people who want rural quiet without leaving the Whanganui District. No supermarket, café strip or community hall was confirmed in the locality, and no school is listed under the Marybank name. Primary and secondary schooling means a trip to schools elsewhere in Whanganui.
Properties on the rural wastewater scheme have a council sewer connection, but a rural section should not be assumed to be connected until the property file is checked.
Recycling is collected at the gate for households in the village collection area. Marybank is not a visitor destination with a track, beach or lookout of its own. Most people who come here live here, or are visiting someone who does.
