Whanganui District Council provides three designated self-contained freedom camping areas within the city. The sites are at Anzac Parade alongside the Whanganui River, Kowhai Park, and Moutoa Quay in the city centre. A self-contained vehicle certificate is required at all three sites — camping without one is not permitted. Stays are limited to two consecutive nights per site; Kowhai Park has public toilets nearby, while Anzac Parade offers river views with limited services.
