What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a report from April 2024, which focused on students’ pride in their ties to Whanganui and Te Ātihaunui-a-Pāpārangi. ERO described a whānau-led kura beside Pūtiki marae and the Whanganui River, guided by Te Aho Matua.
Students are immersed in the te reo Māori of Whanganui and use the local dialect naturally, lead karakia and other traditional forms, know their whakapapa links to the hapū and iwi of Te Awa Tupua, and visit places of significance in the rohe. Students are keen, confident learners, and whānau from outside Whanganui feel welcome.
Most board members were newly elected, and they are working with leaders on a new strategic direction and a review of policies.
ERO found that assessment of student progress and achievement was limited and that it could not confirm how reliable the data was, so assessment needs to improve, and trustees and staff need analysed information on attendance, progress and achievement to guide decisions.
ERO recommended the kura work with Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori o Aotearoa on these priorities. Whānau also hope to extend the kura into a wharekura for older students.
