What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a report from November 2023, which looked at how well the kura supports students’ wellbeing, learning and belonging as descendants of Whanganui. ERO described a member of the Ngā Kura ā Iwi collective with a new principal and leadership team since its previous review.
Learning is place-based and draws on ngā atua Māori, trips out of the kura, and students’ part in iwi, hapū and marae events, and the curriculum reflects whānau aspirations and the Whanganui iwi education strategy. Newer trustees are being mentored, and ERO noted that most senior students were gaining NCEA.
ERO also raised serious concerns. At the end of 2022 a majority of students in Years 1 to 10 were not meeting the kura’s own expectations in literacy and maths, and there was no plan to speed up their progress.
Targets need strengthening, a professional growth cycle for teachers was not yet in place, and self-review and internal evaluation need to be set up, starting with health and safety policies.
ERO found two compliance actions for the board, on keeping an ongoing self-review programme that includes achievement information and on appraising teachers and the principal, and recommended the kura work with Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa on all its priorities.
