What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the kura is a Ngā Kitenga Arotake Report from February 2025, written by ERO’s Māori Review Services.

ERO describes a kura at Rātana Pā, affiliated to Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa, whose leaders and whānau want uri immersed in te reo Māori and able to continue their learning at the kura through to Year 13. It found that the kura gives uri strong support to grow into leaders of Ngāti Mōrehu, and uri take charge of morning whakamoemiti for the whole kura, with the teachings of Tahupōtiki Wiremu Rātana at the centre of each day.

Pouako are caring role models, uri with additional needs are well supported, and uri are confident in te reo Māori and the tikanga of their iwi. ERO also noted that fewer than half of uri were meeting curriculum expectations in te reo matatini (literacy), with stronger results in pāngarau, and that pouako are looking at better assessment tools.

The next step ERO set is to finish the draft local curriculum and confirm it with whānau. ERO also found the kura had legal obligations to meet: reviewing its policies and practice on managing challenging behaviour and physical restraint and making sure parents, staff and the community know them, completing police vetting before staff start work, strengthening how staff are appointed and staff records are kept, and meeting its financial responsibilities, because annual financial statements had not been prepared, audited or sent to the Ministry of Education in recent years.

ERO recommended that the board and pouako seek support from Ngā Kura ā Iwi o Aotearoa to meet these requirements.
