Whanganui Rubbish & Recycling

Bin collection days for every Whanganui suburb, what goes in each bin, and where to drop off everything else.

Whanganui District Council collects recycling every week in three crates, but it does not collect rubbish, which is done by private companies. Here is how to find your collection day, what goes in each bin, and where to take everything else.

Have your bins out by 7am on collection day. A few streets differ from the rest of their suburb, so check your exact address with the council’s lookup.

Good to know

Who collects my rubbish?

Rubbish is collected by private companies. The council does not run a kerbside rubbish collection. Private user-pays operators include EnviroNZ, Low Cost Bins and Waste Management.

Can I mix materials in one crate?

No. Each crate holds one group only: plastics and cans, glass, or paper and cardboard. You can use more than one crate for a group, but crates filled past the line are not collected.

I have too much recycling. What now?

Take the extra to the Resource Recovery Centre, where recycling drop-off is free.

Is there a garden or food scraps bin?

Not from the council. Low Cost Bins, Enviro NZ and Green Garden Waste & Supplies offer garden waste collections, and Easy Earth offers a weekly food waste collection.
