Te Manawa is Palmerston North’s main museum — a combined art gallery, science centre and regional history museum under one roof. Entry is free and it’s suitable for all ages. The New Zealand Rugby Museum on Cuba Street holds the world’s largest collection of New Zealand rugby history and memorabilia. Both are in the city centre and walkable from each other.

Victoria Esplanade is the city’s premier park — 26 hectares of formal gardens, bush walks, mature trees, a miniature railway, mini golf, playground and paddling pool. Entry to the park is free, with small fees for some of the activities. It’s a good option if you’re travelling with children.

If you want to push out of the city, the Manawatū Gorge (Te Āpiti) has an 11.2km walk through native bush above the river, with panoramic views of the gorge. The trailhead is about 20 minutes east of the city centre.
