Whanganui has ocean, estuary and freshwater swimming options within easy reach of the city. Castlecliff Beach is the main surf beach, a long stretch of black sand patrolled by lifeguards in summer, with conditions that suit experienced swimmers. Kai Iwi Beach, about 20 km north, is a quieter black-sand beach with a more sheltered feel. For freshwater, Lake Wiritoa offers calmer conditions well suited to families with young children.
