Lip and Cheek Filler in Whanganui: What to Know Before You Book

Last updated November 2026

New Zealanders search for lip filler more than a thousand times a month, and it is an easy treatment to misunderstand. Some people expect a dramatic change, others worry they will end up looking overdone, and many are not sure what the treatment involves at all. This guide covers what dermal filler is, what it can and cannot do, how long it tends to last and the questions worth asking before you book an appointment in Whanganui.

What dermal filler actually is

Most dermal fillers used for lips and cheeks are gels made from hyaluronic acid, a substance the body already makes to help skin hold water. A practitioner injects small amounts of the gel to add volume, support or definition in a chosen area. Different gels are made to be softer or firmer, which is why the product used in lips is usually not the same as the one used along the cheekbones or jawline.

Filler is not the same as anti-wrinkle injections. Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles that crease the skin when you frown or squint. Filler adds volume where it has thinned or where you would like more shape. Many people are surprised to learn they only need one of the two, or neither.

Lips and cheeks: what each is used for

Lip filler

Lip filler can add volume, define the border of the lips, improve balance between the top and bottom lip, or soften fine lines around the mouth. A small amount placed carefully often looks more natural than a large amount placed quickly. If you bring reference photos, use them to show the shape you like rather than as a target to match exactly.

Cheek filler

As we age, the fat pads and bone structure in the mid-face slowly change, and the cheeks can flatten. Cheek filler is used to restore some of that support. Because the cheeks hold up much of the lower face, a skilled practitioner will often look at the whole face before treating, rather than adding volume only where you point.

How long does lip filler last?

It varies more than most people expect. Lips move constantly, so lip filler tends to break down faster than filler placed in less mobile areas like the cheeks or chin. Clinics commonly quote somewhere between six and eighteen months overall, depending on the area, the product used and how quickly your own body breaks it down. Your practitioner should give you a realistic range for your treatment rather than a single promise.

Side effects and safety

Most people have some swelling and tenderness for a few days, and some bruise. Lips in particular can look larger for the first day or two than they will once settled. Serious complications are uncommon but real, including filler being injected into or pressing on a blood vessel. That is why training, anatomy knowledge and a clinic’s plan for managing complications matter more than the price.

Many hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved by a trained practitioner if something is not right, which is one reason they are the most common type used for lips and cheeks. Ask whether your practitioner can do this and how they would handle a problem after hours.

Can you have filler while pregnant?

Most practitioners will not treat during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and will ask you to wait. The same caution applies if you have an active cold sore, a skin infection near the area or certain medical conditions, so be open about your health history at the consultation.

Choosing who treats you

  • Check they are a registered health professional. You can confirm a nurse holds a current practising certificate using the Nursing Council’s register search.
  • Expect a proper consultation before any treatment, including your medical history, your goals and an honest view of what is realistic.
  • You are entitled to clear information and to give informed consent, as set out in the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights.
  • Ask what product will be used, how much, and what aftercare and follow-up are included.
  • Be wary of anyone who pushes extra areas or more product than you asked about.

Aftercare in the first few days

Most clinics suggest avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, alcohol and pressing on the treated area for the first day or two, and keeping make-up off the injection points until the next day. Swelling usually settles within a week. If you notice increasing pain, skin colour changes or anything that worries you, contact your practitioner straight away rather than waiting.
