Castlecliff Domain Whanganui: Beachside Playground, Skate Park and Picnic Spot

Last updated October 2026

A playground, a skate park and the Tasman Sea shore sit side by side at the western edge of Whanganui. Castlecliff Domain is a council reserve on Rangiora Street in Castlecliff, the beachside suburb close to the mouth of the Whanganui River.

Whanganui District Council calls it a “spacious open reserve”, with a playground for young children, a half basketball court and a skate park for older children and teenagers. Toilets, a drinking fountain, picnic tables and barbecues are on site, and the beach is right beside the playground.

About Castlecliff Domain

The domain fronts Rangiora Street, which the council describes as “recently revamped”. It is an open, grassy reserve rather than a formal garden, set up for active play and for spreading out a picnic.

The play area is aimed at younger children, and its centrepiece is a rope climbing structure. Older children and teenagers have their own corner, with a half basketball court and what the council calls “a challenging skate park”. Open grass runs along both sides of the playground, with room for kicking a ball around.

The beach sits next to the playground, and the council points to it as a cool option on hot days. Castlecliff Beach and the skate park each have their own post on this site, so this one sticks to the domain as a park.

Facilities

The council lists toilets, a drinking fountain, picnic tables and barbecues at the domain. The barbecues and tables sit in the same reserve as the playground and courts, which keeps a group together while children move between the climbing frame, the court and the skate park.

The Coastal Reserve Next Door

On the western edge of the Whanganui urban area, facing the Tasman Sea, the council also looks after the Castlecliff Coastal Reserve, a strip of mostly dune land and wetland of about 38 hectares that runs 3.1 km north from the mouth of the Whanganui River along the Tasman Sea.

Whanganui District Council has worked with the community group Progress Castlecliff on dune rejuvenation there. The council gives its address as Seafront Road, Castlecliff.
