At the very end of Kaiwhaiki Road, about 30 minutes north of Whanganui, That Place MTB Park is a 50 ha private mountain bike park with trails “built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers”.

The operator grades its trails from Grade 2, gentle flow, to Grade 6, which it calls “white knuckle”, and Discover Whanganui says there is a flat loop for beginners alongside the intermediate and advanced riding. It is a paid park, booked online.

New riders get an induction from the staff, and Discover Whanganui says that once inducted you can ride whenever you want. The last 10 km or so in is gravel road.

About That Place MTB Park

That Place is a privately run mountain bike park that Discover Whanganui says is aimed at riders who want a challenge. Discover Whanganui describes a range of intermediate to advanced trails and a flat loop for beginners, and the operator’s own grades run all the way from gentle Grade 2 flow to Grade 6.

It is not only for riders. Walkers, runners and campers are welcome too, there are walking tracks, and the operator lists glamping in domes and tiny houses booked through Takahuri Glamping. Discover Whanganui notes that guiding and coaching are available, and the operator lists e-bike adventures.

Because it is a private, paid park, the way in is different from a council reserve. Riding is booked through the online booking system, and new visitors are inducted by staff before they ride.

Booking, Passes and Inductions

The operator’s website books day passes, River Loop rides and the van shuttle online, has details of evening riding, season passes and gift cards, and shows the current prices.

On your first visit, staff give you an induction. Discover Whanganui says that after that, inducted riders “are able to ride whenever they want” within the park’s opening days, Thursday evening to Sunday evening.

Racing at That Place

The park hosts events as well as everyday riding, including enduro racing, and the operator lists what is coming up on its website.
