About Waitaha Pā Track

Waitaha Pā is a small historic pā site close to the city, and the walk up to it is one of the quickest ways to combine a bit of Māori heritage with a river view. DOC describes it as a culturally significant site that offers a peaceful taste of the region’s natural beauty and history.

The path is short but steep. It winds up through regenerating native bush and across farmland, with glimpses of the Whanganui River on the way, before reaching a lookout with panoramic views of the river valley and the surrounding hills.

At the top there is a picnic table, so it’s a good place to stop for lunch, take photos or simply sit and listen to the birdlife. Because the whole walk takes about 15 minutes, it makes an easy stop on State Highway 4 on the way to or from Upokongaro.

As a historic pā site, Waitaha Pā deserves respect. Stay on the track and leave the site as you found it.
