Hawera is about 90km north of Whanganui in South Taranaki — a 75-minute drive up SH3 with Mount Taranaki visible on a clear day. The town is best known for the Tawhiti Museum, one of the most unusual and impressive museums in New Zealand, but there’s also a climbable water tower, a well-kept park with a lake and the coast not far away.

Tawhiti Museum
Tawhiti Museum is a private museum created entirely by local artist Nigel Ogle and is unlike anything else in New Zealand. The displays use scale models, life-sized dioramas and thousands of hand-crafted figurines to depict South Taranaki’s history — Māori village life, colonial farming, bush logging and the New Zealand land wars. There are also boat and train rides on certain open days. The museum has a devoted following and draws visitors from across the country.
Opening hours are limited: Friday to Monday from September to May, and Sundays only from June to August. It’s worth building your day around these hours.
Other Things to See in Hawera
The Hawera Water Tower, built in 1914, is a 55-metre landmark with 215 steps to the top. The views take in Hawera, the Tasman Sea and Mount Taranaki on a clear day. King Edward Park on Camberwell Road has a lake, mature gardens, children’s play areas and picnic spots — a good stop between museum visits. Ohawe Beach is the nearest coastal option if you want time by the water.
